Let me just start by saying that I absolutely loved this book! I can honestly say that I hadn't read a novel dealing with the issues that was dealt with in this novel before. It was raw and emotional and I was riveted and sucked in from page one. The characters are real and Emma. Oh Emma! I was a mess of emotions when it came to her throughout this entire read. I read it in one sitting, I really couldn't put it down.
In a nutshell, the protagonist Emma Thomas is living with her aunt and uncle and their two young children since she was twelve years old. She was put into their care after her father died and her drunken mother was deemed unfit to take care of her. Emma is a loner. She doesn't let anyone close and shies away from situations that would get her noticed. Sometimes it's hard for her to completely shrink into the walls of high school being friends with Sara McKinley. Sara is Emma's only friend and Emma likes it that way until one day the new guy, Evan Matthews, comes in and disrupts her whole world, turning it upside down and she's never the same again. But Emma has a secret and Sara is the only one who knows and she's desperate that no one else finds out.
This novel had me so emotional and I don't get emotional when reading often. I'm a romance junkie so the romantic parts were great for me. I felt tears prick my eyes in moments when I read what Emma endured living with her aunt and uncle. I couldn't help but thinking, 'Damn, that bitch to hell because Emma doesn't deserve this.' Picture this, Emma is a straight A student with a 4.0 GPA and she's involved in sports, excelling at it actually and the editor of the school newspaper and every day somehow turns into her own personal hell on earth. She's constantly made to feel worthless and unwanted. It broke my heart.
Evan! Oh sweet heavens Evan. He was . . . sigh. I loved how he never gave up even when she was pushing him away. His relentless pursuit of her was endearing and the relationship that blossoms between the two is absolutely adorable and heart-warming. Sara is the world's best friend. She's supportive and she's always looking out for Emma's best interests even when she doesn't want her to.
I'm just going to ramble on about this story and I don't want to spoil it any more than I possibly already have. The only thing that I didn't really like about the novel was the last chapter and epilogue. The end was so abrupt, nothing resolved and Emma's fate sort of hanging in the air. I was left unsatisfied and then I started searching the net and jumped for joy when I found out that Ms Donovan was writing a sequel!
*Breathes Sigh of Relief*
I am excited for the next novel and to see what's in store with Emma, Evan and Sara . . .
Have a read, It's a fantastic book . . . Happy Reading :D
